Beginner’s Luck as Omen– The Page of Pentacles 4/26/22 by Michelle Embree

The Page of Pentacles holds their golden pentacle carefully, delicately with what we might interpret as a look of awe. This is the most appropriate look for a Page as this position is generally understood to mean students or apprentices. What we see is a beginner enamored of their undertaking and cautious in learning to wield its powers with care and grace. This card is often associated with those who are taking up a new magickal practice or path.

At the beginning of any learning experience, we need to allow ourselves to not know and to embrace the position of the student. It is only through the full realization of the student or the apprentice that we avoid attempts to emulate the teacher and become open to the fresh point of view we will bring to our pursuit. This might be of particular importance if our new undertaking is one pertaining to magick.

Melchizedek tells Santiago about what he calls the principle of favorability

In Paulo Coelho’s book The Alchemist, the hero, Santiago, meets Melchizedek. In this meeting, Melchizedek tells Santiago about what he calls the principle of favorability or beginner’s luck. According to this story, beginner’s luck is what happens when a student is taking the right course. Favorable outcomes early on grant a taste of what success will feel like. Be advised, however, that learning will always require trial and error. Failure and success are forever wed and we will do well to never forget their unbreakable bond. Use that streak of luck like an omen. Allow it to whet your appetite and show you the way into your next phase of learning. Melchizedek explains to Santiago that one’s Personal Legend revolves around what one has always wanted to accomplish. While this fiction story inflates the ideas it presents in order to entertain the reader, we can find actionable wisdom in the story.

…a sense of belonging within the larger scheme of things or what Melchizedek refers to as the soul of the world.

We do create our own life stories and the seeds of this personal legend are found within our desires to accomplish what will make us feel most like ourselves. It is through our effort toward these goals that we will experience feelings of purpose which in turn puts us in touch with a sense of belonging within the larger scheme of things or what Melchizedek refers to as the soul of the world.

No one can tell us what will give us a sense of purpose, we must find these pursuits of our own accord. Further, these pursuits might not bring in money or change the course of future history. That which allows us a relationship with the soul of the world may not look like success to others. Pursuit of our deepest desires will not necessarily draw love to us or put us on a track to vindication. Remove all those ulterior motives and commit to that which would give you the look of awe we see on this Page were you to hold it in your hand.

May we rip the heart of our desires from the grip of industry.
