DIGGING DEEPER

For DIGGING DEEPER a 10 sided die is rolled and I explore whichever item it lands on. Sometimes this section will explain different dimensions of the item and other times it will be a rambling story about what an item means to me personally. The thing I’m trying to do here is show that even the simplest item is multifaceted and has far more definitions than I can ever explain. Every item is it’s own world, it’s own entity.

The item we’ll be doing a deep dive with this week is:

#250: BREATH MINTS

I think BREATH MINTS is the perfect item to start out with in the new year. What better to symbolize the idea of masking something instead of fixing it?

Now, I would like to believe that just because the calendar flips things will get better, that we’re getting a “clean slate.” But let’s be honest here. All that’s happened is that we had to buy a new calendar and life continues on almost exactly the same as it had before.

We do love that narrative tag, though. The year starts and we’re off to the races. New year, new you.

This is why I think BREATH MINTS is perfect.

A breath mint doesn’t fix the problem of bad breath. It only obscures it with a better scent. The halitosis of reality is still buried beneath but we’ve made it pleasant for those around us. It’s a superficial change at best. The root of the problem remains.

Exactly how the new year can obscure the continuing cycle of events that surround us without any care for the last digit of the sequence of numbers that helps us organize our lives.

Sometimes reality needs to be freshened, even for the briefest of moments, but don’t expect that to solve the deeper issues.

That’s all for now. Come back next week for another dig into the BOTTOMLESS BAG.

As always:

SEE WHAT’S INSIDE

DIG DEEP

HAUNT ON
