This is my one page intro for Eric J. Millar’s Outlet Press Omnibus, a collection of the last decade’s worth of his illustrative narratives.
You’re a pawn. You’re a fiddly digit, tethered to a nervous system. Subjugated, perhaps oppressed? Your tune is not your whistle. Yet, in this shallow reading of archetypal playthings, your balance beams shiver hard and kick even worse.
You are not a pawn. You are an etching on a paddle, scarred with marks. You are an indent. Your eyes start to squint.
You’re a rat named Harvey on a perpetual machine, black-eyed and somber.
You soothsee the coming end of the cosmos in your cornflakes. And as you ponder the dirt beneath, your visage drips and drifts like spoils and spills of ink.
You are a loony toon, bardo bouncing in between canyon falls, enveloped in somatic onomatopoeia. Each death a momentary comfort in a chapel of cacophony.
A cat and a cock await your eternal return, rolling dice in an impossible game between each soul you burn.
But your ghost is too busy performing sleight-of-hand in a vacuum for a 4th dimensional audience. You’ll master this stage show. You have all the time in the world now.
You’ve been here before. You’ll be here again. Yet, next time you’ll bleed in an alien language unfathomable to this timeline. And each time, you’ll stay a little longer in this cereal-voyant, bardo bouncing, never-ending hamster wheel of metamorphosis.
You are the creations of Eric J. Millar.
And you are right to stay a little longer.
