Whether you choose to take these items literally or metaphorically, it’s up to you to find how these things may help. DIGGING DEEPER

I think it’s time for a little change up for this part of BOTTOMLESS BAG. The essays and recommendations don’t feel right for this venue so I’ll be doing something a little more specific to the items of the week. I’ll be moving the unrelated, longer form writing to another place and may do a monthly digest column to collect them on We, the Hallowed later.

Where does this leave DIGGING DEEPER? It will be used to drill down into a single item from the weekly crop of ten. I’ll be utilizing a ten sided dice to determine my item and we’ll deep dive into whatever comes up. I’m hoping this will give y’all an example of how I see BOTTOMLESS BAG being used.

This week’s item is:

#189: NIGHT

One of the reasons I like using single words chosen at random over Tarot cards or other more popular means of divination is because of the absolute openness of interpretation. Traditional oracles have the weight of tradition and scholarship. Random words have nothing but potential. NIGHT is a perfect example of this.

What does NIGHT mean to you?

It could mean the end of the day, the ultimate reset before a new day begins. Maybe you see the stars and the moon, illumination is the darkness. NIGHT means something totally different from one person to another, forcing the interpretation to depend entirely on YOUR experiences and preferences.

For me, NIGHT means solitude and quiet. It’s when my wife and son are asleep and I finally get the time alone that I need to recharge and regroup. NIGHT has always been my favorite time of the day. People are in bed sleeping. There’s no traffic. Stores are empty. The world you run in becomes smaller and bigger at the same time.

Now, how would I use these feeling for divination?

Let’s say the question is about a relationship. What could NIGHT mean for that? Perhaps it means that your relationship is at the point of sunset and you should consider ending things? Maybe that person is a beacon of light in an otherwise dark world? Could it makes you think about being in bed with your partner, under the covers, warm and safe?

Maybe you’re asking about your job or a project you’re currently working on. NIGHT could mean that you need to find and follow the “stars” for direction. Seafaring folk would always find their direction in the night skies and maybe you should be seeking your celestial landmarks. Maybe it means that you’re going to through a period of darkness and you’re waiting for the sun to rise, illuminating everything.

NIGHT could mean absolutely anything and that’s the true beauty of it. How you react to the word NIGHT in your divination practice is itself an act of divination. It’s a reflection of who you are in your world and how you perceive your own environment.

That’s all for now. Come back next week for another dig into the BOTTOMLESS BAG.

As always:
